But there is clearly still a greater risk for mortality in older patients with one or more co-morbidities, which increases the necessity for great care in determining whether surgery is an appropriate treatment option, particularly in the case of patients older than 75, in whom their life expectancy should be a key factor in determining whether any form of invasive treatment is appropriate by comparison with expectant management techniques.
