DOMINION POST: Prostate cancer patients are being offered faster, more targeted and more effective treatment with the introduction of a high-dose radiation therapy at Wellington Hospital.

The technique, “high-dose-rate brachytherapy” uses small plastic tubes placed into the prostate and irradiating it from inside.

It will cut radiation treatment from seven to four weeks and is especially effective for advanced cases.

Waikato Hospital is the only other NZ centre to use the technique. READ MORE>

Paul HutchisonPROSTABLOG NZ: The widespread confusion many men feel over the advice they receive on early detection and treatment of prostate cancer is untenable, says Dr Paul Hutchison, chairman of the NZ Parliamentary Health Select Committee. READ MORE>

He says this in an article he wrote for today’s Dominion Post newspaper in Wellington, just two weeks from when his committee will be hearing submissions to its inquiry into prostate cancer screening and treatment.

That a leading New Zealand urologist, Robin Smart, recently concluded ‘‘the evidence suggests that between 200 and 300 of the 600 men who die annually of prostate cancer could be saved by current technology’’ indicates greater efforts need to be made, he writes.

JULY 16: DOMINION POST: A UK scientist and one from Norway have challenged Otago University professor Murray Skeaff’s report from a Prague conference that a study due out soon  will clear folic acid of its potential links to prostate cancer.

They  say he omitted to mention a Norwegian study presented to the meeting – which found an overall increased risk of cancer in two trials (including deaths) – and point out the Prague conference on Homocysteine Metabolism last month voted by majority to oppose mandatory fortification of foods with folic acid.  READ MORE>

JULY 15: DOMINION POST:  New Zealand has effectively been given the green light to axe rules forcing bakers to add folic acid to bread from September. The office of Australian parliamentary secretary for health Mark Butler told Wellington’s Dominion Post newspaper it was New Zealand’s call whether to proceed with the trans-Tasman standard, agreed in 2007.
